The body of a tribal woman was kept outside crematorium for four hours as her poor family did not have enough money to buy firewood at Ratangarh village in Neemuch district on Friday.
The tehsildar had to intervene so that the family could carry out the last rite.
Nojibai, the wife of Ratangarh village resident Jagdish Bheel, died at her residence on Friday morning. Jagdish had only Rs 250, which was far less than Rs 2,500 sought by a staffer at the crematorium.
Jagdish had to wait for four hours before help reached the family. Till then, the body was kept on a platform outside the crematorium. Seeing no respite, some relatives of the Bheel family reached out to senior officials for intervention in the matter. Subsequently, the local tehsildar rushed to the spot and asked Jagdish to take the body for cremation. In the meanwhile, the tehsildar ensured the necessary formalities.
Admitting the episode, sub-divisional officer Jagdish Mehra said he would ensure no such incident takes place in future.
Chief municipal officer Premchand Jain said relevant action would be taken and a show-cause notice issued to the staffer who did not allow the family to cremate the body.
