As the Maoists geared up for a decisive battle against the government on Saturday, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, backed by 22 out of 25 parties in the Constituent Assembly, has instructed the Nepal Army to remain on high alert.

In an emergency meeting of the National Security Council, Madhav Nepal said that the Army would not remain confined to the barracks if the Maoists — approximately 200,000 of them — resorted to violence. He said that the Army will also guard vital installations in the capital.

The government has taken a tough stance after the Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoists’ demanded that the Prime Minister step down by Saturday evening and a government led by UCPN-M chief Prachanda be formed.
At a tri-party meeting on Friday, Madhav Nepal said that while he will not be cowed down by threats and political intimidation. He warned Prachanda that any threat to peace, tranquility, life and property would be countered boldly and decisively.
