NCW requests media to drop term ‘honour killing’

New Delhi, June 25

The National Commission for Women’s chairperson Girija Vyas yesterday, appealed to the media to shun the term “honour killing” in its reort and use another term which should highlight the heinousness of the crime without invoking any element of honour.

At a meeting organised with representatives of the different media groups to share and discuss concerns of the commission on issues related to indecent representation of women in the media and the need for self-regulation, she said due care must be taken in the tone and choice of words so that crime, especially those against women, was not glorified.

Vyas said the commission strongly favoured self-regulation by the media as the preferred mode of regulation in keeping with the Right to Freedom of Speech enshrined in the Constitution.

She said that while the news channels were, by and large, responsible in their behaviour, the entertainment channels did require some sort of regulation to ensure propagation of right content.
