The Uttarakhand government will relaunch the National Food Security Scheme on October 2. The scheme is expected to benefit around 62 lakh people in the state while the remaining 65 lakh people will be covered under the State Food Security Scheme.
Under the State Food Security Scheme, the beneficiaries falling under the antodyaya (extremely poor) category and those falling under the BPL category will be covered. Under the National Food Security Scheme, one beneficiary is entitled to 5 kg of foodgrains (3 kg of wheat and 2 kg of rice).
The scheme is expected to be relaunched in the state two years after the previous UPA government at the Centre had announced the central scheme.
However, the Uttarakhand government could not launch the scheme as the Narendra Modi government at the Centre made it mandatory for all states to carry out digitisation of ration cards.
“We will now roll out the scheme as the digitisation of ration cards has been completed and the Centre has also agreed to release our quota of foodgrains,” said Pritam Singh, state Minister for Food and Civil Supplies.
Further, the digitisation of ration card holders, who are covered under the State Food Security Scheme, too will be done. Efforts will also be made to ensure the beneficiaries do not receive less than 15 kg of foodgrains.
The government has made slight changes in the distribution of foodgrains to them, as rice is consumed more in the state the government is giving 10 kg of rice and 5 kg of wheat to the beneficiaries.
