Villagers from Nangli in Fatehabad district elected a woman sarpanch and five of the seven panchayat members unanimously. Nisha Rani, a senior secondary pass, was elected sarpanch; this will entitle the village for cash incentives from the state government for development activities.
Nisha Rani (32) is married to Tara Chand of Nangli village near Tohana town. Besides Nisha, the villagers elected Rakesh Kumar, Mahipal, Suman Devi, Rajbir and Suman Bala unanimously as panchayat members.
Villagers celebrated the unanimous election today by distributing ladoos. Ram Niwas, former sarpanch of the village, confirmed the elections and said efforts were on to reach unanimity for the remaining two seats. The village has seven wards with 810 votes.
Nangli village witnessed violence during the last panchayat polls leading to firing that resulted in serious injuries to a villager. Talking to The Tribune, Nisha said she would work towards improving the sanitation facilities in the village and ensure that toilets are constructed in every household.
She added her priority would be eliminating the menace of female foeticide and empowerment of women through education and employment.
District Development and Panchayat Officer (DDPO) Rajesh Koth said it was a welcome step, but the authorities would confirm the election after withdrawal of nomination was complete. He said the Haryana Government would give cash incentives of Rs 11 lakh to any panchayat where the sarpanch and all members were elected unanimously.
Koth said for a panchayat where only a sarpanch was elected unanimously, the government would give Rs 5 lakh as incentive and for unanimous elections of panchayat members, the amount of incentive was Rs 50,000 per member.
