MY MINISTRIES HAVE VAST JOB POTENTIAL, SAYS SELJA
Chandigarh June 30:
Union Tourism and Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Minister Kumari Selja said that both the ministries under her had a vast potential for employment generation and convergence between the two was under consideration of the Government to utilise their full potential.
Addressing media persons here, Ms. Selja said the thrust area for the Government would be creation and improvement of tourism infrastructure, promotion and publicity of India as a preferred tourism destination in overseas markets, promotion of domestic tourism, development of human resources through skill development, skill certification, broad-basing the hospitality education and most importantly employment generation. Tourism, she said, should result in sustainable and equitable growth.
She said that after a decline in foreign tourist arrivals, ranging between 10.6 per cent and 17.6 per cent during the first three months of the current year, as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, May 2009 saw a decline of only 1.9 per cent as compared to May 2008. She said holistic and integrated development of identified mega destinations/circuits was one of the priority areas of the Government. Earlier, the ministry had identified 22 sites for tourism destination development out of which 20 mega projects had been sanctioned. Subsequently seven more mega circuits had been identified for development in an integrated manner.
