Thiruvananthapuram Police in Kerala have swooped down on a schoolboy as the suspect in the killing of his schoolmate, 14-year-old Lijin Varghese, a Grade 10 student of St George Higher Secondary School at Muttar in Alappuzha district this week.

Lijin's body was found after a search of the school premises following his failure to return home by late evening on the first day of school.

Reports stating that the murder was committed following an enmity that had developed between the two more than a year ago has shocked parents. The suspect reportedly harboured vengeance against Lijin and murdered him by inflicting multiple injuries on his head with a knife.

Lijin's neck was slashed with a knife and there were injuries on the head apparently inflicted by a stone. The suspect then absconded before police caught him in Changanacherry.

Classmates of the suspect had said that he would often carry knives and other weapons in his school bag, and that this information had helped police in nabbing the suspect. It is also reported that the boy had a disturbed family background.

The murder happened on the first day of school for Grade 10 students this academic year. Classes had ended as early as 11.30 that day, being the first day of school, but when Lijin failed to return even by late evening, his anxious parents alerted police and launched a search with the help of local residents.

Lijin was from Pathanamthitta district, and was going to school in the adjoining Alappuzha district.
