Chandigarh October 11:

After 40-year-old Tripatdeep Singh Sekhon was shot dead in city’s Sector 9, a high security area, the city residents raised questions on the level of seriousness shown by the local police in providing security to the denizens. With the kind of laxity shown by the local police, people do not find themselves in a secure place to live in.

On July 13, former president of Muktsar unit Youth Akali Dal Tripatdeep Singh Sekhon alias Tippa, was shot in the city’s VIP sector where the houses of Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and other important Government functionaries are located. Speaking to reporters, Sector 7 Resident Welfare Association (RWA) president NK Jhingan said: “If a person can be openly shot dead in the city’s porsche area amidst numerous security personnel deployed outside the VIP houses, how can a general citizen call himself secure?”

“I openly say that the police is always involved in showing laziness in such cases as it is shocking that an area police fails to catch assailants entering the area,” alleged Jhingan. Informing further, he said that they have been requesting the police since many years to verify the residents through concerned area police station, to keep a track of illegal residents and to check not only fictitious but every vehicle by keeping a record. But police never paid heed and crime is on its peak these days. Further alleging, Sector 8 RWA president Daleep Singh Sandhu said that as most of the crime cases end up with a non-verified resident living in the area and giving rise to crime, the regular track is required. No validation, no checking has ever been done in the area despite our repeated attempts, he added.

With RWAs and citizens are furious upon the decreasing security environment in the city, where the top officials are not coming up with any explanation, they have not taken a single step to tighten the security for future. The cops had found Sekhon fatally wounded behind the showrooms next to Madhya Marg in Sector 9 near to the house of senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Vinod Sharma. The Malout resident Sekhon was attacked as a result of an enmity with another member of his party, 32 years old Minkal Bajaj. A murder case was registered at Sector 3 police station.

Then UT SSP SS Srivastava said: “The city police have always worked efficiently towards the security of citizens. After the incident, we are finding the lapses that gave way to this murder and assure the residents to be provided infact by more secure environment.” Sector 7 RWA former president AK Vangul added: “A man being shot openly is not an issue to be ignored and the Police Department does not have any identity if it’s not working towards the security of the citizens. The State Government, local administration and Police Department is sitting on the issue and has not taken a single step to ensure people’s security.”
