Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan and hoped that the two neighbouring countries would succeed in removing the trust deficit to firmly entrench lasting peace in the region.
Quoting former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Mufti said countries can change friends not neighbours. “Both New Delhi and Islamabad will have to resolve the issues to allow peace to return on the borders and the LoC (Line of Control),” he said, adding that J&K bears the brunt of violence when guns roar on the borders.
He was addressing after attending an attestation-cum-passing-out-parade of the 12th Batch of 385 trainee recruits at the Police Training College, Ganderbal, here today.
Mufti hoped that both India and Pakistan would work to strengthen the existing mechanism so that peace holds and prevents regular flare-ups, which play havoc with those residing close to the borders and the LoC.
An agreement was recently reached between the Director Generals of the Border Security Force and the Pakistan Rangers to respect the truce agreement.
Describing the J&K Police as one of the most professional forces in the country, the Chief Minister, who also holds the charge of the Home Department, said it had taken a lead role in difficult and trying circumstances and fulfilled its responsibility.
“Over the last six months, the police have faced challenging situations, which they have dealt with admirably,” he added.
