A mother-daughter duo was arrested for stealing jewellery from a Camac Street shop on Saturday evening. They had earlier shoplifted at a mall in the same locality and were looking for a repeat, but police, armed with video clips from the previous heist, managed to catch them in the act.

On Wednesday, employees of a reputed Camac Street jewellery shop realised that a diamond-fitted pendant was missing. They lodged a complaint with Shakespeare Sarani police station. After going through the video clippings recorded in the closed-circuit television, police zeroed in on a middle-aged woman and a young woman with her. When the clippings were shown to the staff, they identified the two, who had come looking for diamond-fitted ornaments. The two were at the shop for about an hour, but left without buying anything.

On Saturday evening, acting on a tip-off, police found the duo at another shopping mall on the same street. They were nabbed while they were trying to lift an ornament from its case, and later identified as Debjani Sen and her daughter Priya. Police confirmed their previous crime as well.

Debjani, a widow, stayed with her daughter at Lake Gardens. Police suspect their sophisticated outlook did not arouse any suspicion when they entered a shop as customers. They would then ask for different kinds of jewellery, look at them and then leave in a huff. They would leave the shop either pretending to attend a call or Debjani would fall ill if the shop was too crowded. The ornaments were lifted after the attention of the employees were thus diverted.
