To shrug off the perceived pro-rich tag, Prime Minister Narendra Modi plans to propagate the ‘Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojanapath’, a crop damage scheme, along with other pro-farmer measures taken by his government through “kisan abhinandan” rallies in different parts of the country.
Sources say the government’s “pro-poor or farmers” agenda will also be reflected in the coming Budget, despite constraints and pressures to cut down the fiscal deficit. While in his “Mann Ki Baat” last Sunday, the PM talked of popularising the “historic step (crop insurance)” by his government, BJP leaders say he will reach out to the rural community through “pure” farmers’ rallies.
Farmers’ rallies in four states — Madhya Pradesh (February18), Odisha (February 21), Karnataka (February 27) and Uttar Pradesh (February 28) — will be followed by similar exercises across the country.
“The BJP believes that farmers are satisfied with steps taken by the government. However, the Congress’ dushprachar (vicious propaganda) is creating a perception in the minds of the rural community about the government because of which it has failed to get due credit for good schemes such as irrigation scheme and soil health cards. Through these rallies, the BJP will be able to counter the false claims of the Opposition party,” a BJP leader said.
