MOBILE LEADS COPS TO SUSPECT IN CUPBOARD

JALANDHAR:

Hiding in a cupboard at his house couldn't save proclaimed offender Parveen Singh (46) from the long arm of the law, as the police had pin-pointed the sus- pect's location from his mobile phone.

Wanted in a case of land fraud worth more than Rs 1 crore, Parveen was nabbed by the district police on Monday from his residence in Bombay Nagar here.

The suspect was declared a proclaimed offender eight months ago for selling some plots near Khambra village to multiple buyers, earning more than Rs 1 crore. He had paid more than Rs 80 lakh to a Mumbai-based accomplice, who was arrested over a year back, according to Inspector Balwinder Iqbal Singh Kahlon, in-charge of the Economic Offences Wing here.

"Unable to trace him since a long time, the police during a routine exercise found his mobile phone switched on for a short while, and immediate- ly traced it down to his resi- dence. But the police party that raided his house couldn't find him for more an hour and a half, till they spotted a tightly shut cupboard. The team opened it, and out came the suspect," Kahlon said.

Parveen has a case against him under Sections 406, 420, 467, 468 and 471 of the IPC at Police Division No. 7.
