JALANDHAR: In a bizarre incident, a room at St Joseph's Convent School for Boys in Defence Colony, which contained answer sheets of the recently-concluded first term examinations, was set on fire by unknown persons on Wednesday night.

While police have started investigations, it is being suspected that it could be work of some student(s) who did not attempt well in the exams. The exams had concluded on Wednesday and the same night the answer sheets were destroyed. The marks obtained in the first term are reportedly added in final result.

Three school guards are being questioned to get gather information. However, what has made job of the police tough is that they will have to adopt unconventional non-coercive methods during investigations as it could involve minors and that too from well-to-do families.

It is learnt that the incident took place after 10 at night. The guards on duty, who noticed the fire, raised an alarm after which the police and fire brigade were informed. Bus stand chowki incharge Jatinder Jit Singh said though it did not take much time to control the fire, the answer sheets were almost completely destroyed. He said a hacksaw was recovered that was used to cut the lock and then to set the answer sheets on fire.

A school official submitted a complaint to the police stating that some unknown persons trespassed into the school and after breaking open the door set the answer sheets on fire. The police have registered a case under sections 457, 436 and 427 of IPC which imply that crime is of serious nature.

Police sources revealed that while needle of suspicion was going towards some student(s) those who had made some commitment with the school for doing well in these exams for continuing their studies here could come under the scanner.
