The face off between Municipal Council, Mussoorie, and Landour Cantonment Board has resurfaced once again with the MC stopping the disposal of garbage from the Cantonment area.
The civic body was picking the garbage form Landour Cant Board from the past several years under a makeshift arrangement due to absence of the Cant Board’s own trenching ground. Under this makeshift arrangement, the Board was paying MC Rs 40,000 per month as monthly garbage picking charges.
With the end of the 11-year contract last year, the MC had stopped the exercise completely, resulting in immense problems to the residents of the Cant Board.
Following the intervention of Dehradun Deputy Magistrate (DM), the arrangement was started once again, with an assurance from Landour Cant Board that it would come up with its own trenching ground within three months.
However, with no sign of the trenching ground, the MC stopped garbage disposal, forcing the Board to dump it near Mullingar, thus posing health hazards to the residents living nearby once again.
MC President Manmohan Singh Mall said the practice had been stopped as the extended contract between the MC and the Cant Board had ended yesterday.
When contacted, vice-president of Landour Cant Board Mahesh Chand said due to a controversy in the construction of the proposed trenching ground in the Cant Board area, work had to be stopped and the matter was pending in a lower court.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Landour Cantonment Board, has been informed about the matter, he added.
Cantonment Board CEO Pankaj Kumar was not available for comments.
Meanwhile, residents said if the garbage disposal problem was not resolved soon, the area would be infested with flies and mosquitoes, resulting in high health risks in the near future.
