The People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) chief, Manpreet Badal, will merge his party with the Congress in Delhi on Friday. The merger will take place in the presence of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi at the All-India Congress Committee office.
A district president of the PPP, who wished not to be named, said all central council members of the party had been asked to be present in Delhi tomorrow. "Most of them have already reached Delhi," he said.
The announcement is likely to be made in the presence of Rahul, Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh and Partap Singh Bajwa.
On Tuesday, Manpreet had admitted that talks were on with the Congress regarding the merger. "It (the merger) is required to get rid of the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal and the Badal family. Punjab needs to move beyond the personality-based politics," he had said.
Manpreet had parted ways with the Akali Dal in 2010 and formed the PPP but none of the candidates of his party, including himself, could win the 2012 Assembly elections.
