The police have arrested a man for attempting to rape a six-year-old girl at Madanpura village here.
The suspect, Rajesh Kumar, who hails from Gurdaspur and is currently residing at Madanpura village, lured the victim, who lives in his neighbourhood, to his room yesterday and attempted to rape her.
The victim’s mother, who was looking for her, spotted her in the suspect’s room and raised the alarm.
Residents of the area gathered at the spot and overpowered the suspect.
Later, he was handed over to police, who registered a case under Sections 376 and 511 of the IPC at the Phase I police station.
Inspector Sukhwinder Singh, SHO, said the suspect was produced before the court, which remanded him in judicial custody.
The suspect worked as a waiter at a hotel and was unmarried.
