A 40-year-old e-rickshaw driver was killed on Wednesday morning after being hit by a speeding tempo in west Delhi’s Subhash Nagar. Police said the victim, identified as Matibool, a resident of West Bengal, lay bleeding on the road for close to 90 minutes before they reached the spot. No one had come to his aid in the meantime.
CCTV footage showed that a rickshaw-puller, in fact, stopped near the bleeding Matibool and made away with his mobile phone that was lying nearby.
A police officer said that they had obtained the footage of the incident and were examining it.
The accident took place around 5:30am but was reported only around 7am. A police team reached the spot and rushed Matibool to a nearby hospital. Doctors declared him brought dead, stating that he had died due to excessive bleeding.
Police later found some documents in Matibool’s pocket that helped in ascertaining his identity.
He apparently drove an e-rickshaw during the day and worked as a security guard in Subhash Nagar at night.
“We contacted his colleagues at the company where he worked as a guard. They told us that Matibool had completed his night shift and left for home around 5am,” said an officer.
Matibool was hit by a tempo from behind while on his way home, the officer said.
“The tempo driver got off his vehicle immediately to take a look at the injured man. But instead of taking him to a hospital, he got back into his tempo and drove away.”
Most people who might have seen Matibool on the road may have ignored him for a drunk, the officer added.
“We have formed a team to identify the killer tempo driver and arrest him. Efforts are also on to identify the rickshaw puller who took away Matibool’s mobile phone,” the officer said.
A case of rash and negligent driving causing death has been registered.
