Even as a controversy rages over a plot of land allotted to actress-turned-politician Hema Malini for a dance academy, the Maharashtra government is likely to take back another plot of land in her possession since 1998.
According to state government sources here, a plot of land measuring 1,742 sq mts in suburban Versova allotted to the actress in 1998 is likely to be taken back since the original purpose of setting up a dance academy there was not carried out.
“Notices have already been issued to Hema Malini to take back the plot,” a source in the Mumbai Suburban Collector’s office said. The actress has been accused of destroying mangroves on the plot, which falls under the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ).
At a press conference earlier this week, Hema Malini said she was unable to set up her dance academy on the plot originally allotted to her because it fell under the CRZ and construction on it was not permitted. The actress further added that she would return the first plot when she takes possession of the plot at Oshiwara in suburban Mumbai.
However, information obtained by RTI activist Anil Galgali showed that the office of the Mumbai Suburban Collector had issued notices to Hema Malini way back in 1998 for violating the CRZ restrictions. The RTI query also showed that a trust controlled by the former actress had paid Rs10 lakh for acquiring the first plot.
