CHANDIGARH: More than 80 residents of Daria village near Industrial Area attacked a liquor vend there on Sunday and assaulted its three workers. They were alleging that Surinder Singh, aged 36, had succumbed to the injuries he had sustained after the vend's workers attacked him.

Police said the alleged attack took place on Thursday, but Surinder's family only told them about it on Sunday after he died at PGI. Members of the victim's family said they took him to General Hospital at Sector 6 in Panchkula, from where he was referred to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, on Saturday. GMCH-32 doctors referred him to PGI on the same day. The victim's brother, Narinder Kumar, told mediapersons that when Surinder returned home on Thursday, he said he had received internal injuries in a road accident.

However, when he was being rushed to GMCH-32, Surinder disclosed that he was assaulted by the liquor vend employees. Surinder died 15 minutes after doctors at PGI operated on him. Devi Singh, who was with Surinder on Thursday night, said a fight had taken place after vend employees refused to give the victim a bottle of beer. Sources said the attack on the liquor vend took place when Narinder was giving his statement at Daria police post on Sunday.

They added that the attackers also looted cash and liquor bottles from the vend. Area SHO inspector Yashpal Kumar said the statements of deceased's family members were being recorded and a case had been registered against the attacking mob.
