The Bharatiya Janata Paty (BJP) Monday urged the Manmohan Singh government to treat the Mumbai terrorist attacks as 'an open war' and demanded that those responsible for it including Pakistan's ISI must be tried in the International Court of Justice.
India must successfully identify the people who masterminded the Nov 26 terror attacks and indict the organisations like Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), its political front Jamat-ud-Dawa (JuD) and the Pakistani spy agency ISI for playing an active role in the operation, BJP president Rajnath Singh told mediapersons here.
He said the people and organisations behind the terror attack, which left 170 people including 26 foreigners dead, should be tried in the International Court of Justice.Though 'a policy of pro-active counter-action would show the government's intent, military strikes could be the last option', he said. The government must explore all other options, which can help India to put pressure on the international community to act, he said.
'The government should also take the international community into confidence and persuade them to join in launching a joint military action, under the supervision of the United Nations Security Council, against terrorists operating from Pakistan,' Rajnath Singh said. Among the options that the country could consider, he suggested a naval blockade of Karachi, a step that is in 'conformity' with international laws, according to the BJP chief.
'The BJP has promised to give its wholehearted support to any concrete action taken by India against those directly or indirectly linked with the Mumbai terror attacks. But the government needs to match its rhetoric with concrete action,' he averred.
He also said it was high time for the government to use its diplomatic channels with the US to stop all financial assistance to Pakistan and work jointly on imposing economic sanctions against it. 'India must immediately withdraw from the India-Pakistan joint anti-terror mechanism and also snap its economic ties with the country,' said Rajnath Singh, who had been a minister in the previous BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.
