Lotan Prasad Verma was a teacher in a village in Varanasi District,UP. He was English teacher teaching English to his students but he also taught an additional subject “Honesty”, the principle he himself followed.
Never to give bribe nor take any was his motto, this was his undoing because he was expected to give a share of his hard earned salary to the corrupt officials who distributed it which he refused. Naturally they resented his action and with the Principal of the school decided to teach him a lesson. He locked up the attendance register and when there was an inspection, Verma’s attendance was not marked and he was threatened that he would be sacked on account of absenteeism.
After all poor Verma had to take care of his five daughters and a son so he gave up and agreed to pay the bribe the clerks were asking for. But now the ego of these sharks was hurt so they decided to teach Verma a lesson for daring not to bow against their unfair demand.
They humiliated him by asking him to clean their shoes infront of Verma’s student, which he had to, than they started to apply pressure and telling all and sundry that Verma had lost his mental stability so that Verma would take premature retirement they wanted to appoint one of their own man in his place.
Poor Verma having no other option decided to take voluntary retirement but even after that his woes did not end. The amount he was to get after leaving his job was given to someone else posing as Verma obviously with the connivance of the corrupt officials. This was the last straw which made Verma loose his mental balance in real.
Now he lies on a bed in his small house where he has to be chained to bed for his own safety and when asked about his name or any other question he just says a–b–c–d.
The family is struggling to make two end meet,they are being threatened by the officials of Education department because they have registered a complaint against them to their seniors. The police as usual is looking in the matter.
Will the corrupt officials be punished, there seems to be a remote chance because what with the proceedings taking a long long time to conclude as well as give a verdict , the family might not have the resilience to stand upto the pressures, afterall they also have to work for their living.
