Two unidentified militants were killed while two CRPF personnel and two civilians, including a woman tourist, were injured in a brief encounter on Tuesday evening along the Srinagar-Jammu national highway in the Pampore area of Pulwama district, about 10 km south of Srinagar.
The identity of the militants is yet to be ascertained but police sources said one of the militants might be a Pakistani national associated with the militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba.
The Police have claimed that the militants were on way to Srinagar to carry out a major attack. Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir range, SJM Gilani, confirmed the incident, saying: “The injured were being treated at different hospitals in Srinagar and are in a stable condition.”
The incident took place about 5:15 pm in Sempora area of Pampore, which mostly houses government buildings, including Entrepreneurship Development Institute. The exchange of fire was triggered after militants travelling in a load carrier were intercepted by the Police Cargo from Srinagar, Special Operations Group of Pampore and the CRPF near the EDI building in Sempora.
Acting on specific inputs regarding the movement of militants towards Srinagar, personnel from the Police Cargo intercepted the vehicle the militants were travelling in at Sempora. “There were regular inputs that the Lashkar-e-Toiba was going to carry out a major attack in Srinagar and today specific inputs about their movement poured in,” a senior official in Srinagar said.
He said the militants, sensing trouble, hurled a hand grenade and opened indiscriminate fire, which was duly retaliated by the police personnel, triggering a brief encounter. The encounter ended with the killing of two militants.
Two CRPF men and two civilians were also injured during the course of the encounter, the police official said. The injured were rushed to the sub-district hospital in Pampore and were later shifted to Srinagar for specialised treatment. The injured CRPF men from 110 Battalion have been identified as Parvinder Kumar and Muhammad Iqbal Lone.
CRPF spokesperson Ashish Kumar Jha said the injured were in a stable condition. Praising his men, he said: “Our men, putting their lives in the line of fire, intercepted the militants.”
The injured civilians have meanwhile been identified as Ayesha of Patna Bihar and Reyaz Ahmad Dar of Ratnipora area in Pulwama. This is the second militant attack on the national highway in as many days. On Monday, seven 7 CRPF men and a civilian were injured in the Bijbehara area of Anantnag district after militants fired on a Srinagar-bound paramilitary convoy.
