Mumbai: A major landslide near Ratnagiri, triggered by heavy rains that battered the coastal Konkan region for the third consecutive day Tuesday, threw train services between Mumbai and Madgaon (Goa) out of gear, resulting in tremendous inconvenience to passengers.

With no let-up in the incessant downpour in the region, a 20- metre protection wall gave way suddenly in the vicinity of Pomendi railway station near Ratnagiri at 8.30am, and several hundred tonnes of loose soil covered the railway tracks.

The landslide, which did not result in any casualties, brought services on the Konkan railway network to a standstill.

Though the authorities initiated track restoration work in the morning, the work had not been completed till evening.

"We were expecting to complete the restoration work by 6pm today. Since rains have restarted in the affected area in a big way, we may not be able to keep the schedule. At best, we able to restore the services either late tonight or early tomorrow," a spokesman for the Konkan Railway Corporation Limited said in Mumbai last evening.
