Joy after nine days of frustrating wait
In one of the most gruelling rescue operations spanning over almost nine days, the efforts finally succeeded as Mani Ram and Satish Tomar breathed fresh air, much to the delight of everyone. Fighting against all odds, the two exhibited great fortitude and determination to live. While the families of Tomar and Mani Ram are a relieved lot, hope sustains the family of Hriday Ram, who are waiting for a miracle to happen.
Lives at stake
Satish Tomar_ 40-year of age, resident of Amboa village in Paonta Sahib. Mani Ram – 51-year old, belongs to Mandi district. Hriday Ram – 53-year-old is resident of Chakkar village in Balh area of Mandi district. Had worked at Kol Dam for 13 years, including tunneling work. Still untraceable.
Relentless team efforts fructify
The highly technical rescue operation was supervised by MS Rao, Director (Tunnels) in the BRO. He was assisted by tunneling experts and engineers from the BRO, the Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam, Jaypee, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel from Bathinda and Army personnel from Chandimandir. The Hamirpur administration, led by Deputy Commissioner Manasi S Thakur, and Superintendent of Police Balbir Thakur monitored the operation round the clock providing all logistics and equipment in the minimum possible time. Despite facing technical snags and disappointing moments on a number of occasions, the team continued relentlessly and achieved success.
Agonising waitfor relatives
Family members of the three trapped workers, who were camping at the site, went through an agonising wait. Brothers of Satish and Mani Ram were relaxed after the camera, inserted into the hole, confirmed that they were safe. The trauma for the family of Hriday Ram still continues even though his father-in-law Jagdish Chand and maternal uncle say they have not lost hope as with the blessings of their village deity Hriday will come out safe.
