Close on the heels of yesterday’s dacoity at a Panchkula jewellery showroom, three unidentified youths shot dead Satinder Pal Singh, owner of Kanchan Jewelers on the Arya College road, here this evening.

The youths, in their early twenties, shot dead the elderly jeweller in their bid to snatch his bag.
The incident took place in the parking lot of Kalgidhar Sahib Gurdwara at around 7:45 pm when Satinder Pal Singh and his son Amrit Pal Singh were preparing to get into their car to leave for their home at Phase 3BII in Mohali. They had just closed down their shop.
The father-son duo used to come from Mohali to Kharar in their car, which they parked in the parking lot of the Kalgidhar Sahib gurdwara. They further went to their shop on a scooter, which remained parked at the gurdwara during night hours.
Nearby shopkeepers told TNS that two young boys approached the father-son duo and tried to snatch the bag that was in Satinder Pal's possession.
When Satinder refused to part with the bag, one of the boys hit him hard with an iron rod. During the struggle, Satinder's spectacles fell and his turban, too, got dislodged.
When Satinder still refused to budge, the assailant pulled out a pistol from his jacket and fired a round that hit Satinder in his stomach.
He was rushed to the PGIMER at Chandigarh, where he was declared brought dead. The accused managed to snatch the bag after the struggle.
Eye-witnesses said a third person also accompanied the two accused, who was standing outside the premises of the gurdwara. All three fled from the scene on their Pulsar motorcycle.
When they were trying to flee from the spot, one of the neighbouring shopkeepers tried to give them a fight and even blocked their way. However, the armed youths threatened the shopkeeper by showing him pistol and fled from the scene. SSP Mohali Jatinder Pal Singh Aulakh reached the spot and told mediapersons that the Chandigarh, Panchkula and Ropar police had been informed about the incident. "We have sounded the police to put up nakas at various places and round up any suspected person," he added. DSP Kharar Raj Balwinder Singh Sandhu also reached the spot with city SHO Atul Soni. The police was yet to register a case against the accused.
