It was another day, another brutal rape happened in India that shook the nation. A girl was brutally raped, tortured and killed, her intestines were out when the authorities reached the spot. Rightly everybody is outraged at it but haven’t we seen this before. A rape happens, there is outrage based on how much importance the media gives it to the incident, there will be demands for ensuring speedy justice to the victim gets. The victim might or not get justice for what she has faced but what is certain is this incident will be forgotten like all the previous rapes, the rapes that the media covered and the many thousands of rapes which the media did not cover.

If we could just take a moment to imagine the horror we would go through if the victim was one of the women whom we know or love. How desperate would we be, to find a solution to the menace of rapes? Let us act with the same urgency now. Let us debate, find probable solutions to how the menace of rapes can be stopped and how can our women be kept safe.
We propose a few suggestions on how we could end the menace of rapes, it is open to debate, but let us decide soon and evolve a consensus and make a push towards policy making at the earliest. Please feel free to agree to the suggestions, disagree and add more.
1.) Give something to lose – The people who commit rapes, largely are the ones who have nothing to lose, are the ones whose income levels are very low. Any social security scheme which guarantees a minimum wage subject to the condition that any case of criminal or even civil offense will delink them from government benefits.
2.) National Service For All Male Population – Singapore for few years did not report a single rape. The entire male population between a certain age have to go for national service for one year. The one year of national service instills patriotism and as a consequence they learn to value everybody’s life, the idea of hurting their fellow citizen does not arise. A national service for the entire male population between in India between the age 19-23 can play a huge role in sensitizing the value of human life and as consequence rape as a menace could drastically reduce.

3.) Brutal laws – Brutal laws on the lines of the middle eastern countries could serve as a deterrent to rapes in India. Yes, implementing such brutal laws could downgrade our Democracy, but for the safety of our women, could we take this step forward? Yes perhaps.
