Indira's Killers Honoured in New Zealand Gurdwara

The decision by New Zealand's largest Sikh temple to hail as martyrs the three men who assassinated Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi has upset some members of the Indian community in Auckland.

The temple in Manukau has hung on its walls portraits of Gandhi's bodyguards Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, who were killed in a gun battle after firing more than 30 bullets into her in 1984, and of co-conspirator Kehar Singh, who was sentenced to death, the Weekend Herald reported on Saturday.

Entitled "Shaheed Bhai" - or martyr brother - they hang alongside others who have been killed for their Sikh beliefs.

The newspaper described how the pictures had divided the Sikh community and upset other Indians in New Zealand's largest city, which has the country's largest Asian population.

"If someone wants to honour a terrorist, that's an individual choice," Veer Khar, general secretary of the New Zealand Indian Central Association, told the paper.

"But to put them up in a public place, as a community we totally condemn such an activity."

He acknowledged that atrocities were committed against the Sikh community prior to Gandhi's assassination, but said honouring the men who killed her was creating unnecessary tension.

"We sympathise with the pain, we don't deny that those things happened," he said. "We want to say that we have to move on in life."

However, Ranvir Lali Singh, a Sikh who has been involved with the temple for 15 years, told the paper that anyone who died for the religion was considered a martyr.

"We don't consider those who killed Indira Gandhi as terrorists, they are our martyrs," he said. "She was killed by her Sikh bodyguards as revenge for her attack on the Golden Temple, our holiest shrine, and for that, we consider them our martyrs. There is nothing wrong."

A spokesman for India's senior diplomat in New Zealand, High Commissioner Sureesh Mehta, acknowledged the issue was "sensitive", but declined further comment.

If sajjan kumar and Jagdish.T can get rewarded with Ministry for killing Sikhs in 1984 , what wrong with sikh bodyguards considering them Martyrs, and till now Sikh people have not given Justice for 1984 Riots

Whenever 84 topic comes, people always say move on in life.
I am shocked to see this attitude, no justice been served. On top of that culprits have been rewarded with offices both in Punjab and Delhi. What is the guarantee that it will never happen again?

Physical injuries might have been recovered, what about inner self-confidence?
Only way to ask us to move on in life is to restore the self-confidence, restore the confidence back in judiciary and government. This can happen by bringing culprits to justice, holding the law high and resettling of displaced, giving them permanent govt. jobs. It was the failure of administration and government, so it should payback for it. Not only 84 culprits should be brought to justice, but also 1992-92 (Bombay), 2001 (Chattisinghpura), 2002 (Gujrat), 2008 (Orissa).

Nothing less than above will restore the confidence and we will keep on remembering 1984 just like Japanese remember Hiroshima-Nagasaki, or Jews remember their genocide.
Our forefathers have given blood to bring the glow of freedom for all the citizens. We cannot sit back and see some ruling class set free on killing spree in this country.

Sikhs deserve the right to honour the people who gave their lives for the welfare of their society.

It's our community matter and the so called indian high commission has NO RIGHT to interfare as the Gurduwara is not even in India.

LOL@ "He acknowledged that atrocities were committed against the Sikh community prior to Gandhi's assassination, but said honouring the men who killed her was creating unnecessary tension."...rofl

IMO Indira and Bhindrawala were equally responsible for the attack on Shri Harimandir Sahib.
Now that they have honoured Indira's assassins Next will be honouring Bhindrawala's assasins ? No ??

If someone disagree then he/she is most welcome to start a new thread explaining the rationale behind fortification of Harimandir Sahib by Bhindrawala

^^^its funny how you guys just think that people that put up the picture are intolerant when they are not harming anyone by doing that.

takleef sarean nu pata kihnu a...and its not the Gurduwara people...its the nationalists bent on making people forget part of their history.

@ Top Gabru.. Taking sword in hand to protect the innocent and fight against injustice NOT to prompt an attack. One doesn't have to be super intellegent to figure the difference.
Shri Guru Gobind Singh fough with mughals for his entire life, How many times did he visited, occupied or fortified Harimandir Sahib ? Never ! He was wise to realise that mughal forces would follow and attack. A simple wisdom not shared by your hero.
As for the murder of 3000+ sikhs, well if you believe that one stupid grim act justifies another, then congratulations on such a mature thinking :)

Most Sikh leader these days are playing the hate politics and promoting the idea that anything Not-Sikh is Anti-Sikh.
In many Gurudwaras you must have seen portraits of 'Mughals torturing Sikhs in terrible Ways' BUT has anyone seen a picture or mere mention of
Akbar ( It is believed that he donated the land for 'Shri Harimandir Sahib' )
Sain Mian Mir ( Who laid the foundation of Harimandir Sahib )

I guess not.

Many Delhi Hindu saved their sikhs neighbours during 84 riots, Don't they deserved to be honoured by Gurudwaras ?

Do we hear about Shaheed Bhagat Singh?
by Ramesh Kapoor on Feb 13, 2010 11:43 PM

No more! He has been forgotten in time. What about all those Sikhs who died in the cause of Indian freedom, and the free world, during the 1st and 2nd World Wars. Their contribution has been manifold, yet, we have forgotten them over time and only to hold one family in its esteem. The media goes gaga over the events of the escapades of this family, as if it was true to India's freedom, than to scrounge upon the goodwill of the taxpayers. Even those Britishers who Shaheed Bhagat Singh was against had their roots in India, and some were born there. Well, a foreigner who may be naturalized citizen has made the country her subservient; and who cares if the three Sikhs have been given the status of martyres, for they did what they had to do when their Temple was made a battle ground, with many innocents dying. This family is playing religious politics now, and I see no reason why even people like the PM, Dr. Manmohan Singh toes the family's line.
So?

When closet Pakis like Aamir, SRK, (one hasn\'t forgotten Dilip Kumar aka Yusuf Khan) convicted terrorists like Sanjay Dutt, Paki terrorists like Kasab and Afzal are openly eulogised by the corrupt, anti-Hindu, anti-national Congress party, its handmaiden establishment anda venal, collaborative secular media, why this breast-beating over a remote gurudwara in a remote corner of the Southern hemishphere praising Indira Gandhi\'s assassins? Before getting swept away by this establishment-engineered hysteria, let us not forget that it was this dynasty that created the Frankenstein Bhindrawale and the Punjab problem (and all other problems that stalk India) and orchestrated the 1984 massacre of Sikhs - which the 21st century \'dynamic\' prime minister even shamelessly justified. Of course, nearly 30 years later, there\'s no sign of any justice being done to our Sikh brethren, though their killers continue to enjoy ministerial berths and state-provided security. Regular cacaphony is kept up over Gujarat because of their precious Muslim vote bank. As a fellow reader has rightly noted, the Congress regimes have been nothing but venal, corrupt and anti-national descendants of their British masters. No need to shed tears over the gunning down of Indira Gandhi - she got what she deserved.

Will Sikhs ever get justice

The image that haunts the most is the one of a half-burned body of a man being eaten by a stray dog and our leaders justifying the massacre stating that when a BIG tree falls earth shakes.A reminder that there is a case to be made that the Government of India is a lineal, uncaring descendant of the imperial British. The difference between Jallianwalla Bagh and the genocide of Sikhs in 1984 is minimal -- in both cases, we see the triumph of the fascist State and the murderous use of its power. Govt failing to prevent -- the genocide of a small, defenceless minority group. The fact that it was the Sikhs, the most valiant of India's protectors, is a particularly cruel irony. The fact that India's rulers in 1984 actually justified the horror, that they did not deploy the army until three days later, and most remarkably, that several of those who led the pogroms have thrived (one was recently a central minister) are nothing short of stunning. Official figures claim 2,733 Sikhs were massacred in Delhi several thousand others were killed elsewhere. Given endemic undercounting, it is likely that 10,000 Sikhs were murdered in all.
