Kapurthala: India's first air-conditioned double-decker coach on Tuesday rolled out of the Rail Coach Factory here for trials on Delhi-Mathura section.
The coach is likely to be inspected by Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee and senior officers of Railway Board in Delhi on Wednesday, according to Railway sources. Banerjee had announced the introduction of AC double-decker trains in the last Rail Budget.
The new coach with pleasing green-yellow colour has all the features and the comforts of a Shatabdi coach.
RCF general manager Pradeep Kumar said that the factory would start the manufacturing of the double-decker coaches after successful completion of oscillation trials.
These futuristic high-speed, stainless steel AC coaches would be introduced to cater to the heavy rush of commuters in high density corridors offering AC travel at a low cost.
The first double-decker train would be running on rail tracks by the end of this year, said Kumar.
