In a shocking incident of cruelty, a 21-year-old woman was burnt with boiling water by her husband and in-laws in the Old Malda area of Kolkata after she failed to get Rs 50,000 in dowry, Indian Express report said.

According to the report, the victim Rehana Biwi’s husband Azad Sheikh allegedly poured boiling water on her after she failed to get Rs 50,000 dowry as demanded by his family.

Doctors have said that Rehana has suffered around 70 per cent burns and is in a very critical condition.

Rehana’s family has claimed that her husband Azad Sheikh and in-laws have been torturing and beating her for dowry since a long time.

Arajul Sheikh, Rehana’s brother, said that they had given Rs 15,000 cash, gold ornaments and other valuables to her in-laws at the time of marriage but later they started demanding more.

“Since her marriage, her husband and in-laws would routinely torture her, they’d beat her and demand that she bring money. At the time of the marriage, she had been given Rs 15,000, gold ornaments and other valuables. But Azad demanded more,” Arajul told Indian Express.

Police on Friday morning told that Rehana was busy cooking in the kitchen when another argument over dowry demand broke out between her and Azad. He started beating Rehana and in a fit of rage he poured a pot of hot boiling water on his wife.

Rehana, a resident of Jotepur village in Old Malda was married to Azad Sheikh, a resident of Moulpur village in Malda, five years ago. The couple have two children, a three-year-old daughter and a nine-month-old son.

Old Malda Police has registered a complaint against 34-year-old Azad, his father and other family members.
