Hundreds of people gathered to pay tribute to Ishmeet Singh on his Antim Ardas at Gurdwara Model Town Extension, here, on Sunday. An announcement of institution of two separate awards by the SGPC and the DGPC was also made.
Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal announced that in his memory, a memorial in the shape of an international-level music academy would be set up at Ludhiana. He also announced to rename the link road from Pakhowal road to Gill road in Ludhiana as Ishmeet Singh Marg and a financial assistance of Rs 11 lakh for the family.
Chief Minister Badal assured that he would write to the Prime Minister and the home minister to take up the issue of holding high-level inquiry to ascertain the cause of Ishmeet's death with the Maldives government. The chief minister presented two paintings of Ishmeet prepared by two city-based painters, Rajinder Venus and Ashok of Ramgarhia Girls College, to his father. Paying his tributes, Avtar Singh, SGPC president, said with the demise of Ishmeet, an irreparable loss has been caused to Punjab and particularly to the Sikhs, as he fully followed the Sikh tenets.
He also announced a financial assistance of Rs 11 lakh to the family and setting up of an annual music award of Rs 1.51 lakh in his memory by the SGPC. He added that an international institution to impart music training would be set up by the SGPC in the state. Paramjit Singh Sarna, president, Delhi Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (DCPC), while paying his tributes announced a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh for the family and institution of an annual award of Rs one lakh in his name.
