Former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda today ended his indefinite fast at Rajghat after he was denied entry into Haryana. He had gone on a fast at Jantar Mantar to press for peace and normalcy in the state rocked by the Jat reservation agitation.
This led to a slugfest between the BJP and Hooda supporters. While the BJP wondered whether the former Chief Minister’s attempt to enter Rohtak was a “political stunt”, his supporters said the state government was politically motivated.
Annoyed with the state government’s continued stand for the third consecutive day that he should not visit Rohtak, he decided to go to his home district. But his motorcade was halted by the SDM (Bahadurgarh) at Tikri (Delhi-Haryana border). The SDM had submitted him a communication from the Jhajjar Deputy Commissioner, which stated that in view of the tension in some districts of the state, his arrival in Jhajjar was not advisable for security reasons. It further said “he should cancel his tour to Jhajjhar today”.
The wording of the communication led to polemics. Hooda’s supporters wondered why there was mention of a “tour” when it was his personal visit to his hometown to be with people and help restore peace.
After he left for Rohtak, there was a written communication from the government against his entry in Jhajjhar and Rohtak district.
He was stopped at Tikri as the route to Rohtak was vide Bahadurgarh, which is located in Jhajjhar district.
Rohtak MP Deepender Singh, Haryana Rajya Sabha MP Shadi Lal Batra, former minister Karan Dalal and former Speaker of state Assembly Kuldeep Sharma were accompanying the former Chief Minister.Subsequently, Hooda went to Rajghat and prayed for peace. Thereafter, he ended his fast. Kuldeep Sharma said Hooda ended his fast in response to requests from his supporters from across the state.
“We urged him to end the fast in view of his deteriorating health,” said Kuldeep. Before leaving for Rohtak, Hooda demanded adequate compensation to the kin of those killed.
