Chennai: The poll campaign in Tamil Nadu, which lowered its profile after the initial announcement of a range of freebies by both Fronts, has been lifted by the high-decibel campaign by national leaders in the state.

The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which has the Congress as its ally, is attempting to retain power in Tamil Nadu, contesting against the oppposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

The assembly poll for the 234 constituencies in the state is scheduled for Wednesday, the same day that neighbouring Kerala also goes to the polls.

All India Congress Committee president Sonia Gandhi, and her son and AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi made a whirlwind tour of the state in the past few days, campaigning for the Congress and its ally, the DMK.

Rahul Gandhi, who toured Tuticorin district and the Union Territory of Puducherry, emphasised the Congress party's support to various social welfare schemes, and also appealed to the youth of the state.

The DMK has opted out of a number of urban constituencies because it expects a backlash over the 2G spectrum scam, in which DMK federal minister A. Raja is one of the key accused.
