It now appears there was a method in the madness. In his explosive complaint to the Election Commission, the sitting Pilibhit MLA VM Singh has alleged that the inflammatory speeches by Varun Gandhi followed the delimitation of the constituency.
While the BJP candidate from Pilibhit had been inciting voters for some time, his men would ensure that no Television camera followed him. Some camera crew were also beaten up by them. A local photographer attached to the Local Intelligence Unit finally succeeded in surreptitiously shooting one of the meetings. The footage was eventually bought by a TV channel for Rs. 5,000/.
The complainant, significantly, happens to be the first cousin of Varun’s mother, Maneka Gandhi. A former associate of Maneka, Singh, a former MLA himself, fell out and joined the Congress. In his complaint, Singh writes, “He started asking the Sikhs and Muslims to walk out of his meetings; he tells the Sikhs that they are terrorists as they have murdered his grandmother. One such incident happened in Ram Nagar village, where Sardar Gurdayal Singh, an elderly gentleman had to bear the brunt of his foul language.”
Singh said on Thursday that Varun had been desperately trying to consolidate the Hindu votes and that his men had been terrorizing voters for the past several weeks. A voter, Bharat Veer Gangwar, was beaten up when he refused to pull down the flag of Kisan Mazdoor Sangathan. When Gangwar filed an FIR, Varun’s men also filed an FIR against him, alleging that he had shot at Varun with a country-made gun and escaped with Rs. 10,000. On investigation, the police found the allegation to be baseless and dropped the charge against Gangwar. But on Gangwar’s FIR, police has filed a chargesheet.
