Hero Motocorp Ltd founder Brijmohan Lall Munjal (92) died at a Delhi hospital today after prolonged illness. His cremation will be held at 3pm tomorrow at Lodi crematorium in Delhi.
After completing his formal education, Brijmohan had worked at the Army Ordnance Factory before moving to India after Partition.
The four brothers — Brijmohan, OP Munjal, Dayanand Munjal and Satyanand Munjal — had started bicycle spare parts business in Amritsar in 1944 and it flourished well till Partition. Thereafter, they shifted to Ludhiana.
In 1956, the Punjab Government issued tenders for 12 industrial licences to make bicycles in Ludhiana. Brijmohan and his brothers won the contract and Hero Cycles was registered as a large-scale industrial unit. The firm’s capital was partly financed by the Punjab Government.
In 1986, Hero Cycles entered the Guinness Book of Records as the largest manufacturer of bicycles in the world. Before entering into a joint venture with Honda Motors, Brijmohan started Majestic Auto Limited. The company manufactured mopeds, which were a great hit on Indian roads.
