The High Court today sought a fresh status report from the Director, Border Roads Organisation, on steps taken by him for rescuing the labourers trapped inside a tunnel near Bilaspur.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Mansoor Ahmad Mir and Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan passed the orders on a petition taken up suo motu by the court taking cognisance of the news reports on the tragic incident.
In its earlier order, the court had directed the Centre, state government, National Highway Authority of India and Himalayan Construction Company to submit a status report.
The government authorities filed their status report mentioning that the rescue operation was on and they were putting in all efforts to rescue the trapped labourers. But despite clear directions of the court, no one appeared on behalf of the Himalayan Construction Company before the court. The court directed the company to file its report on or before September 22.
The tunnel is part of the four-laning project on the Kiratpur-Ner Chowk national highway at Tihri, 18 km from Bilaspur. A portion of the tunnel number 4 caved in at 8.30 pm on September 12. The construction company had claimed that three workers were trapped inside.
