Chandigarh September 21:

For delaying the allocation of flats in Ludhiana to the victims of 1984 riots, the Punjab and Haryana High Court issued show cause notices to Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner (DC) and another official asking them to explain the delay despite its orders.

This direction came on the petition filed by Ludhiana-based Danga Peerat Welfare Society. The Bench asked them to explain why the court orders were not obeyed within the specified time and why an application for extension has been filed in a “belated, lopsided and indifferent manner”.

Taking up the petition, the Bench of Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal and Justice Ajay Tewari said if the explanation was not found satisfactory, appropriate strictures may be passed against the errant officials, along with directions to include the remarks in the annual confidential reports.
