Catching his daughter with her boyfriend, a 55-year-old granthi from Kainth village, near Dasuya, in Hoshiarpur district murdered the 20-year-old girl, Gurjeet Kaur, and tried to kill the youth, Gagandeep Singh, a resident of Maddi Samara in Amritsar, in the wee hours of Saturday.

The condition of the youth, who is admitted in a private hospital of Kapurthala, is reported to be critical.

Police officials said Sher Singh and his wife Paramjeet Kaur had gone to Jammu for collecting the ETT certificate of their daughter from Jammu University and were scheduled to be return on Saturday, but happened to come back home early on Friday evening, taking the lovers by surprise.

According to Dasuya police station SHO Balbir Singh, the youth tried to run away on seeing the girl's parents but couldn't get away.

The infuriated granthi set upon Gagandeep with a sharp-edged weapon, dumped his body near Kapurthala, assuming him to be dead, and put his car on fire to destroy evidence.

SP (Hoshiarpur) Rakesh Aggarwal told TOI that a case of murder was registered against the granthi.
