New Delhi: The Centre on Wednesday decided to fund the cancer treatment of terminally ill patient Alka Tiwari. An ambulance was dispatched to bring her from Lucknow to Delhi's AIIMS hospital.
On Tuesday a local court issued a notice to the State Government and the Centre. The 21-year old had filed a civil suit asking the government to either pay for her treatment or give her the right to die.
Alka is a slum dweller seeking euthanasia as she needs a life-saving bone-marrow transport which costs almost Rs 20 lakh - something she can't afford.
The Government of India will bear all treatment expenses. Alka is currently admitted at Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Lucknow.
