Gill slams Hockey India’s ‘fascist’ approach

Chandigarh, July 9

The tussle for power between Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) and Hockey India refuses to die down as the latter has decided to stay away from the 63rd Rangaswami Cup Senior National Men's Hockey Championship under way at Bhopal.

Hockey India has said it will impose strict penalties on players, officials and coaches participating in the competition.

Notably, in its judgement on dated May 21, 2010, the Delhi High Court had directed the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to get its act together and set things in order with the cooperation of both the IHF and IOA and any other body that may have been set up.

Terming the approach of HI as Fascist, IHF supremo KPS Gill said, “This is very strange that the sports ministry, headed by a former Election Commissioner, is not obeying the orders of the High Court.”

Gill added that the IHF is not concerned about the promotion of the game. During the two-year suspension period of the IHF, Hockey India did not hold any domestic or national-level tournament in any age category, claimed Gill.

After the Bhopal nationals, the IHF has decided to hold the national championship for u-19 age group in both boys and girls’ categories in Haryana from August 15 to 29 and u-16 nationals in Rajasthan in October.
