German here for wedding, molested

CHANDIGARH: Barely 12 hours after the tourism police had stepped out on the city roads, on the occasion of World Tourism Day, six unidentified youths molested a 20-year-old German national after abducting her from the parking area of Taj Hotel in the city's posh sector 17 in the wee hours on Sunday. Police said she was picked up when she went out of the hotel to smoke. "She was taken to a house first and then to a farmhouse. The youth tried to rape her but failed and got into an argument over killing her," a police officer said. He said that while the heated exchange was on, one of the youths dropped her outside her friend's house at sector 20. "The youths sexually assaulted her during 12 hours of captivity," he said.

The German was in Chandigarh to attend her friend's wedding scheduled for Monday. "She had come to the hotel's 24-hour coffee shop with her friends before she was abducted," the officer said. He said the girl was probably taken to Mohali before she was dropped back at 2:30 pm on Sunday.

Sector 17 SHO Kulwant Singh Pannu said, based on the girl's description, the cops were making sketches of the youth. "She was also taken to a hospital for medical examination," he said.

The Scorpio used in the crime has been identified, he added. The registration number of the black vehicle, HR-58-2123, has been found to be that of an autorickshaw.

Based on the victim's complaint, the Chandigarh police have booked six persons under sections 363, 366, 354, 376, 511, 506 and 34 of IPC. They are also investigating the car, a white Maruti with Haryana registration number which dropped the victim in Sector 20. A team of German embassy officials is also arriving in the city on Monday to monitor progress in the investigations.

In a similar incident earlier, over a decade ago, a French girl Katia had been abducted in the city. Among the accused was the then chief minister's grandson.
