After ten days of relentless Israeli military strikes on the Gaza Strip, Shifa Hospital, Gaza's largest, is being overwhelmed with casualties, as a constant stream of dead and wounded are brought in.

Harried doctors and nurses are working day and night, and the hospital is relying on generators for power after shelling damaged power cables to the area.

The power was completely cut in Gaza City three days ago.

The chaos at the hospital has been getting steadily worse, especially since the Israeli ground offensive began on Saturday night, and in some cases wounded are treated in hallways because emergency room beds are full.

"We are set up to receive dozens of injuries, not hundreds," said Haitham Dababish, the head of patient reception department, Shifa Hospital.

"We the medical team are doing everything we can, we are working day and night," he added.

Since the Israeli offensive started on December 27, around 2,500 people have been wounded, most of whom have come through Shifa Hospital.

UN health officials said Israel had allowed in medical stocks and supplies, but the biggest concern was that the generators, which are meant to be used for back up but are now running continuously, would break down.

The fighting in Gaza, one of the Middle East's bloodiest assaults in decades, has so far killed more than 550 Palestinians, including at least 200 civilians.
