“Porn is passe. These real life crimes are the rage,” these were the actual words used by a shop owner in Agra, when he was interviewed by Times of India.

Such is the case in Uttar Pradesh, where people are seeking pleasure from videos of rapes. Thousands of these rape videos are being circulated in the state every day, right under the nose of the police administration. Each of these video clips ranging from 30 seconds to five minutes are being sold from Rs 50 to Rs 150, depending on their “exclusiveness”.

A Times of India report suggests that these videos are being sold “under the counter” in several shops in rural UP where dealers will talk only to those who’ve come taking a reference of trusted customers. Dealers download these videos directly into the smartphones of the customers or put them in pen drives. Sometimes individuals or organised gangs download such videos from Twitter, Tumbler or Facebook accounts and sell them. Sometimes even culprits involved in rapes or assaults take videos of the crime and post them online.

The circulation of such videos is growing with the growing number reported rape incidents in the state. In many cases, rapists record the crime on their phones and then use the video clips to further blackmail the victims.
