Gaffes unite India, Pak
Two months ago, India’s Women and Child Development Ministry issued an ad with a photograph of former Pakistan Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Ahmad in uniform on the occasion of National Girl Child Day.
Not to be left behind, Pakistan on Friday repeated an advertisement faux pas. The Pakistani Punjab Police launched a public awareness campaign against terrorism. The ad was fine, but for a minor problem. The logo used was not Pakistani but that of the Indian Punjab Police. The logos of both countries’ Punjab Police are the same except for one small difference: Pakistan’s Punjab Police have a star on top of their logo while the Indian Punjab Police use the Indian national emblem (three lions).
Eminent journalist and scholar Khaled Ahmed said: “The job of the police on both sides of the border is to fight crime. Thus, it is just a case of unwitting
solidarity against crime. No one should be punished for this small mistake. The police isn’t recruited to fight any other country; we have the army for that.”
Indians and Pakistanis should continue this friendly rivalry instead of their arms race. Such mistakes do not cost anything. A nuclear war will hurt millions.
