From freedom in Mississauga to Indian jail

A convicted terrorist living freely in Greater Toronto for 15 years has landed in a maximum-security prison in India.
Local police arrested Parminder Singh Saini, 46, when he touched down in New Delhi on Wednesday escorted by Canadian security agents on a chartered jet.
Two weeks ago, Saini lost his bid to practise law in Toronto when the Law Society of Upper Canada ruled he was "not of good character," citing his 1984 Air India hijacking and Canadian security-threat status.
On Monday, Saini's 15-year bid to stay in Canada ended when a Federal Court attempt to delay his deportation order failed. Security agents arrested him on the spot.
Reached at his Mississauga immigration consultancy, Saini's brother Tejindar decried the outcome. "He is in Tihar Jail, the worst in India," under the National Security Act, he said. "There is no bail. He can sit there for years without trial."
Saini, 46, led four other Sikh militants to seize the airliner with 270 aboard. They gave up after a 20-hour standoff. Saini got life in prison and was freed after 10 years.
In 1995, Saini entered Canada with a fake passport under a phony name and lied about his past. Months later, Canadian intelligence officers caught up to him.
