Freak Patiala blast; two hurt

Two unidentified persons were injured in a freak blast outside a temple in Arya Samaj area in the walled city at 8:35 pm on Tuesday.

The cause or any suspect behind the blast so far could not be identified. Police and the district administration denied that it was a blast though witnesses said they heard a loud sound. Both the injured were admitted to the local Rajindra Hospital. Their condition was stated to be stable.

The trouble started when Fastway, a TV channel, showed some objectionable clips of a Hindi movie when a religious discourse was being played on the channel at 6.40 am.
Subsequently, members of Hindu bodies protested. As the protest and complaints by the Hindu bodies allegedly went unheard, they gave a call for a bandh in the market places.
Shutters were downed in the walled city. In the evening, some “communal clashes“ were reported, which led to worsening of the situation. The police swung into action and senior officials, including the SSP, took charge in the city.

Late at night, a case for hurting religious sentiments was registered against Fastway channel.
Pawan Gupta, national pres- ident of Shiv Sena (Hindustan), alleged that no one regretted the incident. He demanded a probe as to played a “mischief“.

Deputy Commissioner Depinder Singh said things were getting back to normal.
Hindu bodies have given a call for a Patiala bandh on Wednesday as a mark of protest.

Patiala SSP RS Khatra denied that a blast took place.

According to him, some tube- lights in a busy market place burst due to fluctuation in power supply and some people got injured when broken pieces of glass hit them. The area saw huge police deployment to avoid the situation getting out of control. So far no case has been registered. A release from the channel, meanwhile, regretted the incident.
