Bangalore: Facebook has launched a lighter version for customers who have low internet speed. Facebook had introduced Facebook Lite a couple of weeks ago and after successful trials it has launched it in India as well as U.S.
"We decided to roll out Facebook Lite in the U.S. to give users a simple, expedient alternative to facebook.com, and hope that it will fill this need. While the majority of our user base is outside the United States, we're always working to enhance the new user experience even in markets where facebook.com is easily accessible. We have also found that people who are new to Facebook tend to be most interested in a simpler experience, focus on establishing their network of friends and communicating with them by writing on their walls, sending messages, and looking at pictures. We have introduced the lite site with these new users in mind," said Facebook to Tech Crunch.
Facebook lite offers fewer services and there are no applications or special boxes. The section, 'people you may know' is still there, but other elements like highlights, events and many others have been removed. Also, you cannot chat with all your friend simultaneously like in the main version where you can chat with 100 people.
Broadband users will not be using Facebook lite but this is a boon for internet cafes and people who use dialup connections. The company said that around 70 percent of its more than 250 million users were outside America. Countries in Southeast Asia and Europe are seeing a massive increase in growth where fast internet connections are more common.
