Explosives in three gunny bags were recovered from a coach of a train at the Howrah station Tuesday night. The explosives were defused Wednesday morning. The NIA is probing if these explosives were being sent to Kolkata for terrorist activities by any insurgency group. PTI

The prosecution on Wednesday demanded capital punishment for eight persons of the 12 convicted in the 2006 Mumbai serial train blasts. The special MCOCA court has reserved its order on sentencing for September 30. Dubbing all the 12 convicts in the case as "merchants of death", Special Public Prosecutor Raja Thakare pressed for death to eight of them. PTI

Rape bid: 3 jump off train
A couple along with their baby suffered serious injuries when they jumped off a train near Dima station after the wife was allegedly molested and an attempt made to rape her by a group of men, railway police said on Wednesday. The trio jumped off the Mahananda Express in a jungle after the rape attempt by a group of about 10 to 12 drunkards in a general compartment of the train, they said. PTI

Riots report submitted
One-member Justice (Retd) Vishnu Sahai Commission on Wednesday submitted a 775-page report to Governor Ram Naik probing the August 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots killing around 65 people and rendering 50,000 homeless. No word of the content of the report has been disclosed. TNS

Seventh Pay Commission is ready with its recommendations on revising emoluments for nearly 48 lakh central government employees and 55 lakh pensioners, and will soon submit report to the Finance Ministry. Earlier in August, the government had extended the commission's term by another four months till December 31 to give recommendations. PTI

Won’t ban Sanatan: Goa CM
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Wednesday ruled out banning Goa-based right-wing outfit Sanatan Sanstha, which has come under the scanner for the murder of rationalist Govind Pansare. "Just because there is suspicion on one person we cannot blame the organisation,” he said.
