The establishment of an examination centre on the premises of Dhanvantri (Central) Library at the University of Jammu (JU) is affecting the preparation of students of the varsity for academic as well as competitive examination.
The students claim that every now and then the university authorities conduct examination at the centre, thereby disturbing the study atmosphere. The aggrieved students said despite having so much space on the campus why the authorities were conducting examinations in the library, claiming that due to this they could not focus on their studies. “Already the library lacks space for students. We have taken up this issue so many times with the authorities concerned, but in vain. What to talk of solving the problem, the varsity has further compounded our miseries by establishing an examination centre in the library,” said Sahil Kumar, a student of the University of Jammu.
“There is better atmosphere for preparation for academic and competitive exams at the Central Library as other students, too, are preparing for their respective examinations. That is why every student prefers the library over home when it comes to preparation. But the prevailing chaos-like situation, especially when an examination is taking place, with so much noise coming it is almost impossible to concentrate on studies,” another JU student Mukesh said.
“I come to library to prepare for the National Eligibility Test (NET), which will be held shortly, but whenever an examination takes place it is futile to sit here even for a while because of the disturbance,” said Payal, a student. “It is better if the university take a decision to shift the examination centre as early as possible,” she added.
When contacted, Dr Vivek Gupta, in charge Librarian, said a new examination centre would be established on the old campus of the University of Jammu. “Yes, we are very much aware of the hardships students face because of the examination centre. In fact, the varsity is likely to establish an examination centre on the old campus. Thereafter the existing centre will be shifted and it will create an additional space for more than 300 students in the library,” he added.
