Patna: Encephalitis is believed to have struck again in Bihar, this time in a virulent form killing as many as 40 children in the past 20 days and seven in the last 48 hours.
The deaths have been confined to the Gaya district in the southern part of Bihar, creating a panic among villagers as there has been no let up despite state government efforts to tackle the virus.
Doctors attending to children at the Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital (ANMMCH) in the district say they have all suffered high fevers, bouts of unconsciousness and convulsions, the symptoms associated with Japanese encephalitis. Authorities said nearly 40 children are currently undergoing treatment.
"Seven children have died of this disease in the past two days, bringing the death toll to 40 now," the head of the paediatrics department at the ANMMCH told Gulf News yesterday. He said the team of doctors was doing their best to save the children admitted to the hospital.
The ANMMCH superintendent Dr Sitaram Prasad said: "[The] majority of the victims are shifted to this hospital at the last stage when their condition turn serious. It's indeed very difficult for us."
