Barnala October 18:

In an apparent attack on former Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal, Deputy Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president said all efforts to weaken or divide the party would be thwarted.

Without naming his estranged cousin Manpreet Badal, the Deputy Chief Minister said the SAD leaders and activists would not allow anyone to weaken or divide the party which had a long history of a struggle and sacrifices. ''It's not the property of any one person.'' He was speaking at the 82nd death anniversary of Sant Attar Singh at Ghunnas village in this district.

Mr Manpreet Badal is nephew of the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and cousin of the Deputy Chief Minister who was recently sacked from the state cabinet and suspended from the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) for anti-party activities.

He said Manpreet Badal wanted to put an end to subsidies in Punjab to save money for the state exchequer. However, the sole aim of the governments was not to earn money for the state but was to spend it on the people. ''Subsidy is not a favour to the people but their right,'' he said.
